Two Styles are Better Than One: Southwest & Vintage Modern

Mixing two styles is almost always better than going with just one. It gives rooms a fresh and interesting twist and keeps spaces from feeling like they came straight from page 36 of your favorite catalog. Some styles play better together than others, however I think that when done right nearly any two styles can work together.

I am not sure how long ago I stumbled on Van Patter Design, but this project of theirs is one of my favorite interiors right now. They were so successful in their mix of Southwest & Vintage Modern throughout the whole house. If you examine each of the rooms closely, its pretty apparent that they chose their major pieces (sofas, beds, tables) in the Vintage Modern style and left the Southwest to the area rugs and accessories.

As you travel from one room to the next the transition is almost seamless because they kept those major / minor rules in tact. The simplicity of the major pieces helps keep the elaborate and dramatic accessories from being overwhelming.

The antler and rustic wood theme continues throughout each space, some areas having more than others, but each room works perfectly with the others. They also brought the red & orange accents into nearly all of the rooms, and they work really well agains the neutral khaki & white backdrop.

As a designer, when I am working with a couple in trying to help them create their dream home I find that its really rare that both people in the relationship like the exact same style. And yet they both want to feel like their home reflects them. Determining the style (or styles) that each individual in the couple like and then finding a way to mix them is not always easy and requires a bit more patience than designing with only one style (& color palette) in mind, however, as the project above shows - your time and energy can really pay off.

If you happen to like the mix of these two styles, you might also like some of the below items:
